English - This is broken down into components of handwriting, creative writing, compositions, comprehension, grammar and spelling. We teach our children to form their letters correctly, rather than pick up bad habits that may stay for life. Personal ideas and opinions are encouraged through story writing, with understanding of the value of style and presentation. Emphasis is made on technical aspects, including punctuation, grammar and spelling in all written work. We cover a range of oral work as speaking skills are considered a valuable contribution. |

Reading - Considered by us to be the oxygen to learning, reading is encouraged from early school years. On entering the school, books will be introduced as an integral part of learning. Having developed basic skills and vocabulary, children are paced at their own level and are never held back for any reason. We provide material that we consider suitable for each individual on a daily basis. Our aim is to balance cognitive and comprehension skills with enjoyment. The children learn not only the mechanics of reading but also the pleasure that can be derived from that activity. Generally, by the age of eight, our children have completed our reading scheme and moved on to novels of their own choice from the school library, culminating in the Children’s Classics in Year 6. |

Mathematics - The Charterhouse Square School presents the children with a foundation course in mathematics - pure, applied, problem solving and practical maths to instil a deep understanding and appreciation of numbers. We follow carefully structured schemes of work right through to Key Stage 2. All children need a sound grounding in mathematical language and principles. Much of the worthwhile mathematics in young children arises out of the everyday experiences of life. Incidental learning is indispensable to the development of mathematical insight, much of which can be supported at home. Maths is taught everyday throughout the school. |
